Exercise of the month: Deadlift Extravaganza

These deadlift variations were submitted by our two new PT’s, Kendra and John. Read more about them below in the staff updates section!

Left: B-stance Romanian Deadlift (RDL) (courtesy of Kendra Bisping, PT at Aretas PT Hales Corners)

Start with your feet about shoulder width apart. To achieve a B stance, step one foot forward about 8-12 inches until the heel of that foot is in line with the toe of the other foot. Your weight should be on the front foot, using the back toes for balance with the heel lifted. Both feet should be pointed forward. Start with and maintain a slight bend/softness in both knees.

To perform the deadlift, push your hips back while hinging your upper body forward. Romanian deadlifts are performed without bending at the knee, so while hinging, maintain the slight bend in both knees that you had at the start. Keep your shoulders back and your chest up. Continue hinging until you feel a stretch on the back of your upper thigh. Return to standing by pushing through your heel and bringing your hips forward. Repeat this movement 8-10 times, then take a break, and repeat for a total of 3 sets. You can do this movement with or without weight.

Right: Conventional Deadlift (courtesy of John Swart, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa)

Start with your feet about shoulder width apart and a soft bend in your knees. Begin the movement by pushing your hips back. As your hips move backwards, hinge at the hips and the knees until a gentle stretch is felt in the back of the legs. Keep your shoulders back and down and your chest up throughout the movement. Return to standing by pushing through your heels and bringing your hips forward. Repeat this movement 8-10 times, then take a break, and repeat for a total of 3 sets. You can do this movement with or without weight.

As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!

Staff Updates:

Congratulations to Hannah Covelli, our Patient Administrative Lead, her husband, Scott, and their older son, Archer, as they welcome their younger son, Judah! Judah has been in the NICU since his birth. Please keep Hannah, Scott, and Judah in your thoughts/prayers as they navigate the NICU and hope to bring him home soon!

Aretas Physical Therapy is also excited to announce two new physical therapists who joined our company this summer! John Swart is a graduate of Texas Tech University and treats patients out of Aretas Physical Therapy Wauwatosa. Kendra Bisping is a graduate of University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and treats patients at Aretas Physical Therapy Hales Corners, specializing in pelvic floor therapy.

We asked John and Kendra what their favorite exercises are. Here are their answers:

John: A conventional deadlift.

Kendra: A B-stance Romanian deadlift.

We aren’t surprised to find two more PT’s who love deadlifts. You can find both of their exercises above in the exercise of the month section!

Baked Crunchy Hot Honey Chicken:

Hot honey is trending. Need something crispy to go with a fresh summer salad? This is that thing. If you haven’t tried a recipe with hot honey, try this one out. This recipe is from Drake Sutton, performance coach at Aretas Performance Hales Corners.

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups cornflakes (gluten free it needed)
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce
  • 2 lb chicken breast tenderloins
  • Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Hot honey ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2-3 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1-3 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3/4 tsp chipotle chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Sea salt
  • Fresh thyme, cilantro, or parsley for serving

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 deg F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a food processor, combine cornflakes, parmesan, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt. Pulse until you have fine crumbs (alternatively you can crush the crumbs in a ziplock bag by stepping on them – good for getting frustrations out!). Dump the crumbs in a shallow bowl.
  3. Beat the eggs in a bowl, add the hot sauce and chicken, and toss well to coat.
  4. Dredge the chicken through the crumbs, covering fully. Place on the prepared baking sheet. For a thicker coating, dip the chicken back through the eggs, then through the crumbs a second time. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until crisp all around.
  5. Just before the chicken is done cooking, make the sauce. In a sauce pot, warm together then honey, hot sauce, cayenne, chili powder, onion powder, and garlic powder, plus a pinch of salt.
  6. Drizzle the warm sauce over the chicken. Top with herbs. If the sauce thickens, warm for 5 seconds in the microwave. Enjoy!

Past Events:

Aretas Physical Therapy 2 year Anniversary Party: Thank you to all who celebrated with us on June 13th! We are grateful for the last two years and look forward to many more with you.

This includes our very own Jack Heinrich, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa, who was cooking for a 5:15 mile! Feel free to challenge Jack to a foot race the next time you’re in the clinic — and if anything bothers you, he or any of our other PT’s can take care of it.

Volley Life Fresh Coast Grass Tournament: Last, but not least, Aretas PT helped staff the Volley Life Fresh Coast Champions Cup, a grass volleyball tournament held at Veteran’s Park. Keith’s Joke of the Month:

Every Monday, one of our patients at Aretas PT Hales Corners brings in a few jokes to share with patients and staff. They have become famous enough that they will now be a staple of the monthly email blast. This joke is from a previous Monday’s selection.

I had a great conversation with a dolphin the other day. We just clicked.

Stop in at one of our clinics for any of your physical needs: health, wellness, rehabilitation, or to hear more information and stay tuned for next month’s updates!
