Exercise of the day: Standing Thoracic Rotation
Is checking your blind spot getting more challenging? Do you feel hunched over at your desk? Then this exercise is for you!
Start in standing near a doorway or wall. Step the foot closest to the wall/doorframe forward so you are standing in a split stance. Reach both arms toward your front leg and use the wall/doorframe for leverage, twisting toward that side. The twisting movement should come from your mid-back and should not be painful. You may feel some gentle stretch behind your front hip. Hold this stretch for about 20 seconds, and return to the start. Repeat 3 times on one side, then switch sides. This exercise can be done once daily, or more often if you’re feeling particularly stiff.
To isolate your mid-back more, step your front foot onto a sturdy kitchen chair, or perform the same exercise with your front foot on the second step of your staircase.
If the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s.
Air Fried Philly Cheesesteaks:
recipe courtesy of Shannon Katz, director of administration for Aretas Physical Therapy.
This meal prep is high-protein, low-carb, minimal fat, and tastes delicious! An alternate way to serve is to skip the tortillas – top a bed of brown rice with the meat mixture and shredded cheese for an easy Philly cheesesteak bowl.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound of lean ground beef
- 1 au jus seasoning packet
- 1 green bell pepper
- 1/2 medium onion
- 8 oz baby bella mushrooms (to your liking)
- 1/4 cup beef bone broth (if you want more protein) or beef stock
- 1 pack of carbless tortillas
- 1 bag low fat part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions:
- Brown beef in a skillet over medium high heat.
- Slice vegetables into thin slices so they cook evenly.
- Once beef is browned, add all vegetables to the skillet and continue to cook. Add the entire au jus seasoning packet, then add the bone broth/stock. Once the liquid cooks down (usually about 10 minutes) and the vegetables are soft, add more broth/stock until you reach desired consistency. Take off heat.
- Add a heaping spoonful of meat mixture to a tortilla with a dash of cheese and wrap into a burrito. For a little extra fat content and flavor, brush with melted butter.
- Air fry for 3-5 minutes or until desired crispiness (remember, all contents are fully cooked. You only need the cheese to melt and the tortillas to crisp).
Upcoming Events: Red Vs. Blue Challenge
Red Vs. Blue Challenge, hosted by Aretas PT Wauwatosa, is a strength and conditioning-based challenge. Any and all participants are welcome to compete in the challenge with the goal of raising money for a Police and Firefighter charity. Following the competition we will host a brat/burger fry at the clinic to continue the goal of raising money for a great cause. The charity we will be donating to is called Next 18. Next 18 is a foundation with a mission: “to use the sport of golf as a conduit to provide transformational mental health resources and holistic life resource training to veterans and first responders.” Please join us to cheer on family, friends, and our local first responders.
If you are a police officer or firefighter and would like to participate in the challenge, please use this link to RSVP and mark “Yes” to show you will be participating in the Strength & Endurance Challenge. If you are not participating in the challenge but would like to support the first responders who are competing, please use this link to RSVP and be sure to mark “No”. If you are curious and would like more information prior to RSVPing, please email Eric King (event organizer) at eric.king@aretaspt.com.
This event is open to all ages. Please join us on Saturday, September 7th, beginning at 10 am at our Wauwatosa location (10930 W Potter Rd, Suite C, Wauwatosa, WI 53226)!
