Exercise of the day: Hip muscle release with ball

Football season is here and those games are long! Is sitting for that length of time bothering the your hip or tailbone? Try this exercise out!

There are two versions of this exercise, standing and sitting (pictures of both above). If getting to the floor is challenging or uncomfortable, try the standing version. The only equipment you’ll need is a small ball (examples include a lacrosse, golf, or tennis ball). Place the ball between the muscles on the back of your hip and a wall, if standing, or between the muscles and the floor, if sitting. Roll back and forth to loosen different areas of the muscle. If/when you find a tight spot, spend some extra time there. Try 30 seconds per hip for a great release.

If you have tailbone pain when sitting, you can use the ball in those areas as well! Roll out the muscles just to the side of your tailbone with the ball in either standing or sitting. Just remember, don’t roll the ball over a bone.

If the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s. Make sure to mention if you are having tailbone/pelvic pain in your message so we can connect you with our pelvic floor specialists!

Creamy Sausage and Peppers Pasta:

recipe courtesy of Jacob Kaiser, technician at our Wauwatosa clinic found on Salt and Lavender‘s website here.

This recipe has a great combination of veggies, savory meat, and a comforting sauce for the chilly fall days that are fast approaching!

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces uncooked pasta (ex: bucatini)
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 medium yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • 1 cup heavy/whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 cups (packed) fresh baby spinach
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Freshly grated parmesan cheese (optional), to taste

Instructions:

  1. Boil a large, salted pot of water and cook the pasta al dente according to package directions.
  2. Meanwhile, brown the sausage meat in a skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up as you go along (about 8-10 minutes). Once it’s cooked through, transfer it to a paper towel lined plate.
  3. Add the oil to the skillet, along with the onion and chopped bell peppers. Cook until the onion is lightly browned and the peppers have softened up (about 7-8 minutes).
  4. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the butter and garlic to the skillet, and once the butter melts, sprinkle in the flour and cook for about a minute, stirring well.
  5. Stir in the cream and Dijon mustard (ensure there’s no lumps from the flour). The sauce should thicken quite quickly, so don’t let it cook for more than a minute or so before moving on to the next step.
  6. Add the cooked sausage and spinach to the skillet and stir/toss.
  7. Before draining the pasta, add in a splash (a couple tablespoons or so) of the hot pasta water to the skillet, then drain the pasta and add it to the skillet. Toss until the spinach has wilted and the pasta is coated with the sauce. Serve immediately with salt & pepper as needed and some freshly grated parmesan cheese.

Past Events: Red Vs. Blue Challenge

Red Vs. Blue Challenge, hosted by Aretas PT Wauwatosa, was a big success! We hosted a number of first responders and had some friendly competition between those attending and the therapy staff.

Big thank you to Legacy Gym, who helped put on the event, and to Next 18, our donation recipient, for taking such amazing care of our first responders and veterans. Keep an eye out for future Red Vs. Blue Challenges if you missed this year’s competition!
